Midwest Refineries – Precious Metal Refiners & Gold Buyers
Chicago has been part of the Midwest Refineries story since long before our recent move south. As a trusted gold buyer since 1939, we understand the Midwest market better than almost anyone, and we’re proud to serve gold sellers throughout Chicago and Cook County with the same honesty that built our reputation over eight decades.
Gold Buyers Chicago IL | No-Fee Buyer Since 1939 – Sell gold in Chicago with zero hidden fees. Midwest Refineries pays 95% of pure gold content plus 100% spot price. Trusted since 1939.
Local buyers offering “top dollar” often quote high percentages while quietly tacking on assay fees, treatment charges, and brokering fees. We don’t play that game. Midwest Refineries charges absolutely no fees. Orders under 3 troy ounces are purchased outright based on average after-melt weight loss and karat purity; orders of 3 ounces or more are melted and assayed for exact content. Chicago sellers receive 95% of the pure gold content and 100% of the spot price on settlement day.
Karat jewelry, gold rings, chains, bracelets, wedding bands, coins and bars, dental gold and bridgework, watches, nuggets and placer gold, scrap and broken gold, gold-filled items, gold solder, sponge, shot and bench sweeps. Gold-filled material is purchased outright at 15% of spot price per pound. We don’t accept gold-plated items, electronic scrap, magnetic gold-filled, or gold-filled with stainless steel.
Call us before you ship — we’ll explain how your material will be tested and what to expect. For security reasons, we do not accept walk-in traffic — all precious metals must be shipped to us using our shipping instructions.
Chicago’s Jewelers Row along Wabash Avenue has outfitted generations of Chicagoans with fine gold jewelry, and the city’s many estate sales, from the North Shore suburbs to Hyde Park, regularly turn up gold that’s been tucked away for decades. Chicago is also home to a concentration of dental laboratories that generate gold scrap and crown material each year, along with numerous goldsmiths and jewelry manufacturers producing bench sweeps and filings. Rather than settling for a discounted local quote, Chicago sellers can ship straight to our refinery and get paid based on an honest assay.
Midwest Refineries has operated as a full-service precious metal buyer, smelter, refiner, assayer and broker since 1939. After 86 years based in Michigan, we relocated our headquarters to Lakeland, Florida in 2025, now led by second-generation owners Joanna and Raul Acosta. We hold an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, and Chicago customers can count on the same honesty and no-fee pricing that has defined our company for more than eight decades.
The stamp on your gold jewelry indicates karat purity: 10K equals 41.7% pure gold, 14K equals 58.3% pure gold, 18K equals 75% pure gold, and 24K equals 99.9% pure gold. Winters in Chicago tend to bring on a lot of closet cleaning and downsizing, and it’s remarkable how much old gold jewelry turns up in the process, tucked away in dresser drawers or safety deposit boxes across the city and suburbs.
Package your gold securely and ship it to our Lakeland, Florida refinery per our shipping instructions. It is not necessary to remove gemstones from karat jewelry or enamel from dental gold, since both are handled safely during the melting process. We weigh, assay and settle promptly, with payment by check, bank wire ($35 domestic fee, $60 international fee), precious metal bars, coins or rounds, or a combination of these. No minimum, no maximum.
Yes. After 86 years based in Michigan, we relocated our refinery operations to Florida in 2025, but we remain the same family-run company Midwest customers, including Chicago sellers, have trusted since 1939.
95% of the pure gold content with zero fees deducted, plus 100% of that day's spot price at settlement.
We don't operate a local walk-in location; for security we only accept shipped gold at our Lakeland, Florida refinery.
We buy dental crowns, bridgework and lab scrap. No need to remove cement or enamel, as it's vaporized during melting.
